"where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." -2 Corinthians 3:17
We fear that if we let go, we will fall. But it is only by letting go that we will truly be free.
In our culture, we have a remarkable freedom that most of the people in human history could not imagine. We are free, largely, from hunger. We are free, largely, from war. We have a menu of options to be and to do. We have the freedom to distract and delight ourselves with entertainment that most of the world and all of human history would consider magical.
Yet few of us feel free.
We are not free from insecurities. We are not free from anxiety. We are not free from depression. We are not free from doubt. We are not free from fear.
Paul reminds us of the path to freedom is not found in the absence of human tyrannies, but in the presence of God's Spirit. The closer we align ourselves with the movement of God's Spirit, the more we will be released from our distractions and freed to live the life we were created to live. Being intentionally mindful of the Spirit calms our anxious soul and focuses our freedoms to God‘s glorious purpose for our lives.
We are we are restless creatures, not because of externally imposed limitations, but because without the Spirit's presence, we are adrift. God intends for us to be his agents of universal and eternal creation restoration. How could we be satisfied with our meager distractions?
Being in the presence of God releases us to be truly free. And in that freedom, we find the purpose for which we were made.
