Present with God: In my Desire

"You open your hand; you satisfy the desire of every living thing." -Psalm 145:16

There is no better place to pursue your heart's desire than in the presence of God.

We might think that the closer we get to God, the more we will give up the things we desire. We might think that being in God's presence will lead us to a placid, empty, meditative, monk-like existence where we give up wanting anything at all. But a life without passion and desire is not worthy of the God who made us. And that isn't the life that he calls us to.

Even your most selfish and sinful desires have behind them a noble and pure delight which God can redeem and bring back into balance. Vanity is a distortion of a desire for beauty. Gluttony is a distortion of a desire for taste. Porn is a distortion of a desire for intimacy.

God doesn't want to rob you of your desire. But being present with God will reveal the true path to pursuing our desire. When we pursue our own desires we tend to do so in a way that pollutes the very thing we are after in the first place. When we seek God first, he will give us not only himself but everything we were searching for in the first place.

God isn't inviting you to a boring existence of bland and empty contemplation. Being present with God leads to a life of joy and power and passion and delight. Being present with God releases us to passionately pursue and truly enjoy the things we most desire.

There is no better place to pursue your heart's desire than in the presence of God.

Be Present with God

Make some time to be present with God. Share with God your deepest desires. Reflect with God on what drives those desires and why they are important to you. Ask him to give you insight on how he intends to redeem your desires for his purposes. Thank him that he is a God who longs to give you everything you desire. Thank him for the way he has made you aware of his presence during this time.
